You could put a thin layer of bubble wrap around the scanner before putting it in the case if you felt you needed extra protection. It is still much better than a soft vinyl case.

The Hermitshell Travel Case is a hard case that offers good protection for mobile scanners. The case does not have any interior padding, but it still offers reasonable protection against falls. It is a great storage and protection solution and is easy to use. The case fits Brother DS-640, DS-740D, DS-720D Duplex compact mobile document scanners, as well as Brother DS-920DW, ADS1700w and Brother DS-620, 820w scanners. However, it will not fit a Canon P-208 II scanner. One reviewer had a bad experience with the scanner itself, but other reviewers are satisfied with the product and highly recommend it. **
